Smallmouth Trips
April/May: While everyone else is jigging the rivers for walleyes, smallmouth are putting on the feed bag after a long winter. Leading up to the spawn, this is your best shot at catching not only a giant, but also can be good for large numbers as well. This trip generally will only require a Michigan license.
June: From late May through June, you can expect huge numbers days if the weather allows. If sight fishing is available, this trip is what St. Clair smallmouth dreams are made of! Generally, this will only require a Michigan license.
July/August: As the spawn winds down in late June, the fish head offshore and begin to group back up. The fish can be anywhere from the northern end of Anchor Bay all way down to the south shore of Ontario and can sometimes be a bit more difficult to locate. However, these are some of the most beautiful mornings of the year and searching out roaming schools can be extremely rewarding. Both Michigan and Ontario licenses may be recommended during this time frame.
September/October: As fall draws near, boat traffic slows down but the bite starts to pick back up. Fish start to sense the shorter days and fatten up for the coming winter months. This is another great time where giants bags can be found with fish moving up shallow again. Generally, only a Michigan license is required.
Walleye Trips
February/March: Trips will be booked for trolling walleyes on Lake St. Clair typically, with a few on Lake Erie as well, depending on the bite. These trips will generally only require a Michigan license. This is a great time to catch a giant pre-spawn walleye staging to head into the river.
April/May: Jigging the Detroit River really starts to ramp up with a ton of fish being caught throughout the river. This fishery is world renowned as one of the most staggering populations of fish in the country. During these trips it will likely be recommended to purchase both a Michigan and Ontario license.
June: Trips to Lake Erie trolling available. Post spawners come back out of the river and put the feed bag on. This trip can be outstanding for sheer numbers of fish catches with a few big ones mixed in. When you're fishing Erie, you always have a chance at a giant! Also potential opportunities for Lake St. Clair trolling trips.
